Dashees Garden 19/ Patch Play Roses

Over the weekend I did some playing with an idea I recently saw in a book.  Pics are below.  I do not know what these are called yet; I just remembered the picture and tried to make something similar.  There is probably an organized method.
I started with a small, square cotton rose cutout and added strips around it in rough hexagonal patterns. I did not measure anything....just guessed at sizes and placement (kind of like crazy quilting). The strips were between 3/4" and 1.5". Originally I liked the off-kilter shapes I ended up with, but then I decided to use a quilting tool and trim a few to perfect hexagonals.  My left brain likes those better.
I do not know yet what I will do with these, if anything....but it is a fun way to use up scraps!

Escaping the Heat

A few weeks ago my husband and I escaped north for a much needed break.  The temps here were in the mid-nineties, but north it was 10 degrees cooler.  After our first stop we drove east to a park on the Lake Michigan coast.  By then it was afternoon and I expected to roast, but I watched the van thermometer drop as we approached the lake.....lower and lower it fell.....to a lovely 65!  It was beautiful.  I have posted a few pics below.
As we drove away I watched the thermometer rise. By the time we reached downtown Milwaukee it read 102. What an escape we had!

Spring Recap

Spring is gone.  The heat is finally here to stay, I think.  Below are a few photos from our lovely May and June.
These  pics are from a nearby park.  The bird is a rose-breasted grosbeak, my new favorite.  Caught him taking a bath...

Weekly Music Nugget 20/ String Players

Just for fun I have a link to a blog post about the personalities of the different stringed instrument players in an orchestra.  I must agree with the writer's assessment of violists....such generous comments (of course I am biased) !!  http://chalumeau.wordpress.com/2010/08/09/personalities-of-the-orchestra-the-string-section/  Enjoy!
