Dec. 31 Scripture

Mark 8:36 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? (New Testament)

2 Nephi 9: 28 O that cunning plan of the evil one! O the vainness, and the frailties, and the foolishness of men! When they are learned they think they are wise, and they hearken not unto the counsel of God, for they set it aside, supposing they know of themselves, wherefore, their wisdom is foolishness and it profiteth them not. And they shall perish.  29 But to be learned is good if they hearken unto the counsels of God. (Book of Mormon)

Proverbs 4: Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.  (KJV, Old Testament)

Dec.30 Scripture

Alma 7:But behold, the Spirit hath said this much unto me, saying: Cry unto this people, saying—Repent ye, and prepare the way of the Lord, and walk in his paths, which are straight; for behold, the kingdom of heaven is at hand, and the Son of God cometh upon the face of the earth.  (Book of Mormon, Alma speaking)

Dec. 27 Scripture

Questions to ponder in preparing for the new year--

Alma:14 And now behold, I ask of you, my brethren of the church, have ye spiritually been born of God? Have ye received his image in your countenances? Have ye experienced this mighty change in your hearts?
................26 And now behold, I say unto you, my brethren, if ye have experienced a change of heart, and if ye have felt to sing the song of redeeming love, I would ask, can ye feel so now?

Dec. 24, 2016 Scripture

Matthew 1: 18 ¶Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.
19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily.
20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.
21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.
22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,
23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.
24 Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife:

25 And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.

Dec. 21 Scripture

The scripture today is taken from the Book of Mormon, chapter 7, beginning in verse 14--

14 Wherefore, take heed, my beloved brethren, that ye do not judge that which is evil to be of God, or that which is good and of God to be of the devil.
15 For behold, my brethren, it is given unto you to judgethat ye may know good from evil; and the way to judge is as plain, that ye may know with perfect knowledge, as the daylight is from the dark night.
16 For behold, the Spirit of Christ is given to every manthat he may know good from evil; wherefore, show unto you the way to judge; for every thing which inviteth to do good, and to persuade to believe in Christ, is sent forth by the power and gift of Christ; wherefore ye may know with perfect knowledge it is of God.

Scripture Musing Dec. 17

One of my sons (Zorro above) was supposed to be home this morning.  Last night his flight was cancelled due to weather after he had spent several hours waiting for his then delayed flight.  This was his first experience like this, and I was concerned about him making other flight arrangements and finding ways to spend his time. I was also concerned about how we would manage traveling 1 1/2 hours south to get him in the middle of more snow.
When I prayed or even just worried about this I felt that everything would be fine.  It didn't make sense to me, but I did a better than usual job of trusting and being calm.  My son seemed to be handling it well, too.  He texted that he had met someone he knew and was visiting with him for awhile.  He considered that a blessing.
Early this morning we found out that his flight was cancelled.  We researched flights and texted him.  When we finally connected he was booked on a flight south to connect with another one north to Milwaukee.  Ha!!  No trip to Chicago for us (phew).  He was with a college student from our Milwaukee ward (congregation), a fine young man who is very "with-it".  They had connected and I think Bob (not his real name) had made the new arrangements.  We will pick him up early this evening 15" from our home as long as there isn't another delay due to more snow.  Now I think that is a miracle!  My family has been very blessed.
The scripture below was part of my scheduled reading for today from the Book of Mormon.  I could not help but see how the Lord has done something similar for my son on a much smaller scale.  He has been delivered from a different sort of bondage and strengthened  in the process.  These things really do happen!

Mosiah 24:  13 And it came to pass that the voice of the Lord came to them in their afflictions, saying: Lift up your heads and be of good comfort, for I know of the covenant which ye have made unto me; and I will covenant with my people and deliver them out of bondage.
14 And I will also ease the burdens which are put upon your shoulders, that even you cannot feel them upon your backs, even while you are in bondage; and this will I do that ye may stand as witnesses for me hereafter, and that ye may know of a surety that I, the Lord God, do visit my people in their afflictions. 15 And now it came to pass that the burdens which were laid upon Alma and his brethren were made light; yea, the Lord did strengthen them that they could bear up their burdens with ease, and they did submit cheerfully and with patience to all the will of the Lord. 16 And it came to pass that so great was their faith and their patience that the voice of the Lord came unto them again, saying: Be of good comfort, for on the morrow I will deliver you out of bondage.

Scripture Musing Dec. 15

 Choosing Christ

Luke 10: 38 ¶Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house.
39 And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard his word.      40 But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.      41 And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:      42 But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.

Scripture Dec. 12

The following lines from a song came into my mind shortly after I awoke this morning.  I have not thought of it in many years so I had to refresh my memory.  It is from the oratoria Elijah by Felix Mendelssohn.  I'm sharing a link for listening below.

Scripture Dec. 11

This scripture from Doctrine and Covenants is often used in reference to missionary work, but it also pertains to scripture study.

Doctrine and Covenants 11: Behold, I am God; give heed to my word, which is quick and powerful, sharper than a two-edged sword, to the dividing asunder of both joints and marrow; therefore giveheed unto my word.
Behold, the field is white already to harvest; therefore, whoso desireth to reap let him thrust in his sickle with his might, and reap while the day lasts, that he may treasure up for his soul everlasting salvation in the kingdom of God.

Scripture Dec. 10

Doctrine and Covenants 93: 24 And truth is knowledge of things as they are, and as they were, and as they are to come;  25 And whatsoever is more or less than this is the spirit of that wicked one who was a liar from the beginning.

Scripture Dec. 5

Mosiah:19 For were it not for the redemption which he hath made for his people, which was prepared from the foundation of the world, I say unto you, were it not for this, all mankind must have perished.
2But behold, the bands of death shall be broken, and the Son reigneth, and hath power over the dead; therefore, he bringeth to pass the resurrection of the dead.

Scripture Dec. 4

Isaiah 52: ¶How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth!     KJV

Scripture Dec. 3

                                        Verses for Christmas

Mosiah 15: 1 And now Abinadi said unto them: I would that ye should understand that God himself shall come down among the children of men, and shall redeem his people.
And because he dwelleth in flesh he shall be called the Son of God, and having subjected the flesh to the will of the Father, being the Father and the Son—
The Father, because he was conceived by the power of God; and the Son, because of the flesh; thus becoming the Father and Son—
And they are one God, yea, the very Eternal Father of heaven and of earth.
And thus the flesh becoming subject to the Spirit, or the Son to the Father, being one God, suffereth temptation, and yieldeth not to the temptation, but suffereth himself to be mocked, and scourged, and cast out, and disowned by his people.
And after all this, after working many mighty miracles among the children of men, he shall be led, yea, even as Isaiah said, as a sheep before the shearer is dumb, so he opened not his mouth.
Yea, even so he shall be led, crucified, and slain, the flesh becoming subject even unto death, the will of the Son being swallowed up in the will of the Father.
And thus God breaketh the bands of death, having gained the victory over death; giving the Son power to make intercession for the children of men—

Having ascended into heaven, having the bowels of mercy; being filled with compassion towards the children of men; standing betwixt them and justice; having broken the bands of death, taken upon himself their iniquity and their transgressions, having redeemed them, and satisfied the demands of justice.
